Ethnic Bodies Series
I will have my voice: Indian, Spanish, White. I will have my serpent’s tongue—my woman’s voice, my sexual voice, my poet’s voice. I will overcome the tradition of silence.
—Gloria Anzaldúa
In this collage series I explore the contradictions of Latinx women that consequently are referencing from our past history to current affairs. From the violent lives of the Mexican border to the “Maquiladora women of Juarez”(assembly line factory workers) I take the viewer into themes like beauty, violence, race, colonialism, sexuality and gender issues in contemporary Mexicanwomen in the US. I mainly use collage and mixed media in my work to express a story, which is inspired by the Dada movement.
